The Process

Initial Contact

  • Interview: A one-time interaction where the student asks prepared questions.
  • Goal: Learn about the community member's specific work.

Job Shadow

  • Action: The student visits the workplace for a day or a series of days.
  • Requirements: Mentors must complete a volunteer authorization form (background check) before this begins.

Evaluation

  • Threshold: Usually occurs after two job shadows at the same site.
  • Decision: The student and mentor decide if they want to transition into a formal internship.

Internship Setup

  • The Meeting: The student’s advisor joins for a "set-up meeting."
  • Outcome: Discussion of goals, expectations, and communication plans.

Internship

  • Frequency: Typically weekly (ideally Wednesdays), but flexible.
  • Duration: No set limit; can range from a few months to a school year.
From our mentors

“This year has been exceptional! Having small group or one on one time with students provides a different level of engagement where we can focus on individual goals and skills.”
